If you are new to custom apparel, the golden rule is simple: you must flip images for iron-on transfers before you print or cut.
When you apply a transfer to a t-shirt or tote bag, you place the design face-down onto the fabric. Because you are flipping the physical transfer paper upside down to press it, the design is automatically reversed during the application process. It's the exact opposite of the mirror selfie fix, where you typically want to un-flip a reversed photo!
If you forget to mirror your image beforehand, your text will read backwards, logos will be flipped, and asymmetrical designs will face the wrong direction. Failing to mirror your design means wasted vinyl, wasted transfer paper, and ruined blank garments.

Which Transfer Methods Require Mirroring?
Not all transfer methods require you to flip your image. The rule depends entirely on how the specific material is applied to the garment.
Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)
ALWAYS mirror. HTV is cut on the back (the dull side) while the clear carrier sheet faces down on your mat. When pressed, the carrier sheet is on top.
Sublimation Printing
ALWAYS mirror. Sublimation ink is printed onto paper, which is then placed face-down onto your polyester blank and pressed.
Light Fabric Transfer Paper
ALWAYS mirror. Standard inkjet iron-on paper for light fabrics is printed normally, then placed face-down onto the shirt to iron.
Dark Fabric Transfer Paper
DO NOT mirror. Paper for dark fabrics is printed normally, peeled from its backing, placed face-UP on the shirt, and covered with parchment paper to press.
Direct to Film (DTF)
Usually automatic. Most DTF RIP software automatically mirrors the design before printing to the film. Always check your software settings.
The Mirror Test: How to Check Before You Press
Pro Tip: Before you waste an expensive sheet of sublimation paper or HTV, do a test print on cheap copy paper first!

- Print your design on standard copy paper.
- Hold the printed paper up to a bathroom mirror.
- If the text and logos read correctly in the mirror reflection, your design is properly flipped and ready to be used as a transfer!
If it looks backwards in the mirror, it will look backwards on your shirt. Go back and flip it! This is the opposite of needing to unmirror photo subjects in selfies — for transfers, you want the mirror effect. Common Mistakes That Waste Materials
Even seasoned crafters make mistakes. Here are the most common pitfalls to avoid when working with iron-on materials:
- Forgetting the toggle: Forgetting to hit the "Mirror" toggle in Cricut Design Space is the #1 reason for wasted HTV. Always double-check your mat preview screen.
- Mirroring twice: If you flip your image in our Flip Image tool and then also check the "Mirror" box in your cutting software, they will cancel each other out! Only flip it once.
- Multi-color layering errors: When working with multiple layers of HTV, you must mirror every single layer. If you forget to mirror one color, the entire design will be ruined.
- Putting HTV shiny side up: Remember, the shiny plastic carrier sheet goes down on your cutting mat. You want the blade to cut the dull vinyl side, not the plastic carrier.

Cricut, Silhouette & Heat Press Software Settings
If you are using a cutting machine, you can flip your images directly in their proprietary software.
Cricut Design Space: After you click "Make It", look at the left-hand menu on the Mat Preview screen. Underneath each mat thumbnail, there is a toggle switch labeled "Mirror". You must toggle this switch to ON (it will turn green) for every single mat in your project.
Silhouette Studio: Right-click your design on the canvas and select "Flip Horizontally" before sending it to the cut panel. Alternatively, when you hit "Send", the software will often ask you if you want to mirror your design if it detects you have selected Heat Transfer material.
